Dr Vimal Varkey

Dr Vimal Varkey is a senior consultant Psychiatrist practising in Toowoomba, currently accredited at St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital and consulting through Focus On Mind Psychiatry. He brings extensive clinical and leadership experience across adult general psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, mood disorders, anxiety disorders and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Dr Varkey completed his specialist psychiatric training in India with both an MD in Psychiatry and a Diploma in Psychological Medicine (DPM) before relocating to Australia in 2012. He achieved Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 2014 and went on to complete advanced training in Addiction Psychiatry in 2020. In 2022, he completed a Master of Health Leadership and Management, enhancing his skills in clinical leadership and health service development. He has held senior roles in mental health services, including Clinical Director of Regional Services Mental Health for the Darling Downs Health Service since 2018, and has served in leadership positions such as Acting Director of Medical Services and Acting Director of Governance at Toowoomba Hospital. Dr Varkey is also a senior lecturer with the University of Queensland Rural Clinical School and an accredited supervisor for psychiatric registrars with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. Dr Varkey consults at Focus On Mind Psychiatry. His practice offers both outpatient consults and coordinated mental health support in collaboration with hospital services, providing evidence-based, recovery-focused care for adults across the Darling Downs region.
