Dr Andrew McAllister
Ophthalmologist (Eye Specialist and Surgeon)
Dr Andrew McAllister is a specialist Ophthalmologist consulting in Toowoomba, offering comprehensive medical and surgical eye care for patients. He is also our only permanent and local retinal surgeon with emergency access to theatre and overnight admissions at St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital. Dr McAllister was born in Toowoomba and grew up in the South Burnett. He worked as a veterinarian in the Kimberley for 2 years before completing his medical degree at the University of Queensland. He completed his ophthalmology training followed by an additional two and a half years of advanced specialist training in vitreoretinal surgery with fellowships at Hamilton NZ, Townsville, and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. He is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, has a Masters of Medicine and is the only regional Queensland ophthalmologist with a diploma of Cataract and Refractive surgery. His caring team aims for the best outcomes possible for their patients with an average of unaided 6/6 vision following cataract surgery based on audit data, with a full time optometrist also working in his practice. Dr McAllister’s additional surgical training makes him the only locally based ophthalmologist that can treat retinal detachments, macular holes and epiretinal membranes urgently. He is also the only local ophthalmologist that has had fellowship training in the management and treatment of age related macular degeneration, retinal vascular disorders, diabetic retinopathy, tumours of the eye, uveitis, ocular trauma, and complex cataract surgery. Dr McAllister’s practice provides accessible specialist eye care close to home, with a patient-centred approach to support visual health and quality of life for individuals in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs region.
